Brunch with Bernie: December 5, 2014

you delmarva near the best to the restive economic and labor news you need to know
that’s the wealth gap in our country isn’t only in increasing inequality it’s
putting people out of work inning in interview with Lynn Parramore
of AlterNet economist berries Siam on Cynamon I and Steve Azari explain how
long term in rising inequality kills jobs and hold back our entire
economy many economists believe that inequality
is only a short term problem in the leads to those the top Spennymoor in
creating jobs however this new research shows that
that’s just not the case Cinnabon and is Ari’s research which is
part of the Institute for new economic thinking proved proves what many of us
have been saying all along on the vast majority of people struggle
to survive on decades of stagnant wages in our money
to spend and thus they don’t stimulate the economy and bus more people and out
of work and about at work as three decades the
reaganomics has put more and more money into the hands of the few as this new research explains quote it
will become more difficult for the economy to generate the sales it needs
to support job creation end quote and as many of us know all
that talk about trickle-down and job creators is nothing but lies in order to create
an economy that works for all of us all of us need to have a little money to
spend the only real way to increase demand which Spurs job creation in and will
start closing the wealth gap once and for all as mister Phys re:
explain quote broadly I think we need to work toward a goal of shared prosperity
wage growth the keeps up with productivity growth across the income distribution and quote
other words we need an economy that works for more than just those at the
top and it’s up to us for to fight for it
Seattle’s socialist city council member wants all
most people who have access to the Internet last week Schamus
want to said she thinks that a portion of the upcoming city budget
should be used to improve the lives of people living in homeless camps and that includes having access to the
World Wide Web more conservative members the council think that the budget should
be devoted to other causes however shower so what argues that
internet access will help these individuals apply for jobs contact
family and friends and keep up with news and current events
these days many job applications and other important services are only available online and its
internet access could certainly help more homeless people get back on their
feet girls whether Seattle City Council
approves the measure or not it’s nice to see the shower so on is one lawmaker who understands that internet access
should be a right not a privilege release the second year in a row Walmart asking employees to donate food to
coworkers who can’t survive because wal-mart’s poverty wages in serbian people living wage the
company’s holding in store food drives in asking workers to succeed by giving
food to their fellow associates course is no surprise the Walmart fights
no shame in asking others to pick up the tab for their poverty wages company is already subsidized by you and
me the taxpayers to the 26.2 billion dollars a year in
government assistance programs for employees who don’t make enough to
survive asking a low-paid workers to pick up the tab for their practices the
certainly an all-time low if wal-mart really cared enough about
whether workers have enough to eat it simply pay a living wage in stop
asking the taxpayers and now their employees to cover that
cost rather jacks Jackson a wal-mart worker to Ohio said
quote my coworkers and I don’t want food bins we want the waltons to improve payette hours that we can buy our our
our own groceries end quote all take before Walmart get
that message republicans in Tennessee’s Stillwater
expand Medicaid to help people this day get affordable health care one couple is refusing to give up on
that i’d Larry and Linda Drane are now the unofficial faces a barricade advocacy in their state last week the
couple organized a public rally outside the Tennessee Capitol and deliver a forty eight thousand
signature purse petition to governor Aslam calling on him to
expand Medicaid there in Linda’s income was slightly
above the threshold to qualify for tenncare that state’s Public Insurance Program
but they did not make enough to cover the cost lenders abseil epilepsy medication because their
state won’t expand Medicaid which would put the threshold at 138 percent the poverty
line the couple had no choice but to divorce after 33 years of marriage by living separately linda’s able to
qualify for the lower threshold together life-saving medication she had to give up living with her
husband just to survive so the couple is fighting for their
marriage and for the 161,000 people who can’t afford health care in their state without the Medicaid
expansion interview thing progress blog Larry said my idea is that I should get live with
my wife it’s nothing radical now it’s up to Tennessee Republicans to
live up to those family values that they love to talk about so much and finally if you care about ending
world hunger you should work to empower women as the fine in a new report by the
brighter the world Institute the report called when women flourish we can end hunger
says the discrimination against women is one of the leading causes a
persistent hunger and malnutrition women and girls who get a quality
education typically have fewer children are more likely to work as adults and
are more likely to have decision-making power in their households and
communities others this report said quote there is no greater force multiplier that
empowered women we make women’s rights and opportunities top priorities we
stand a much better chance at defeating intolerance poverty disease and even extremism to change the world
let’s help women and girls realize their power and that’s the way it is we could
December 1st 2014 I’m Thom Hartmann economic and labored this is the Thom Hartmann program and greens my friends Patriots lovers up
democracy truth and justice believers and peace freedom and the American Way Thom Hartmann here
with you and it’s Friday which means it’s time for a national
town hall meeting with senator Bernie Sanders guy thing covers america’s senator he
people in vermont know him as there’s senator Sanders welcome to the
program great to be with his problem I hate you I saw I earlier in the week
and people who watch listen the program everyday world will know this well that you published your your 12 prescription
12 items that we could do to basically take
back America make america work again and a and and and I I believe you’d like to go through
them in and have people calling in with your thoughts on these useless or Tom you know I think you know people who
listen to the show overdue in the pocket many callers
calling in about the very serious problems facing our country which has
the clap for middle-class growing income and wealth inequality for
the loss of my own for manufacturing jobs such a touchup our soul kloun Tov have talked a lot
about the problems but its important people important to talk about
solutions when we go forward what makes up how to revitalize the American economy so that works for the middle class and
not just the millionaires and billionaires also I was on the floor this week
talking about 12 or specific ideas are love which by the
way get on people will not have from not the
most radical idea for the world but if we were to carry these out it with very significantly transform
our country and especially are the middle class for this country so
if you go by let me just go through it and if people wanna called in during the course of the show
to discuss are these ideas on whether they like it or not would love
to adopt to discuss it of course what are the truth is unemployment a spot 5.8 percent are real unemployment are is or are Eve you left her purse and
if you include those people web given up looking for work all or
working or part time are if we invested one trillion dollars
in rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure that arose bridges arm our water systems way for plants rail airports well which need work are the
people know most about I think that we should invest three trillion dollars to bring our
infrastructure up to par could one trillion dollars over a period of time
years we could grade 13 million disobeying drops just imagine what
america would look like at all over the country rebuilding our roads were betting a
rebuilding our rail system are making it much more are efficient
arc having state-of-the-art water systems
and wastewater plants rebuilding our dams are what it would
mean to america it comes to making us more efficient and
productive are as well as putting millions of
people back to work so rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure
I and investing and that is something absolutely we need to do are number two I think that climate
change is real are that’s what the scientists
overwhelmingly tell us if we can preserve the spotter for our
kids and our grandchildren we need to transform our energy system and that means investing in energy
efficiency and sustainable energy are making our homes and buildings are
much more energy efficient are moving aggressively to wind solar geothermal and other sustainable Energy’s and when
you do that the United States leave the world we create new technologies we also
create jobs but most importantly are we protect the
planet for our children our grandchildren are another area that interests me very
much and I’m excited about it we’re seeing a little bit of a cure for model
but in Ohio is the ideal for all the ships work
ownership of businesses and what we see sometimes as business
guys who started a business they want to retire they don’t wanna see
they are plant or their business move to China they
want their workers to continue are that business we’ve gotta make it
easier for the workers and those business owners to be able to
transform art that business into work cooperative arm instead of giving tax breaks to
corporations wanna move jobs to China I think we should provide
tax incentives to businesses want to transform there our company into
a workaround our enterprise are clearly are in my view artistry is not available on
this but workers were members of unions or
able to negotiate peace and contracts and a working conditions much better than
non-union workers all right now it is in fact very very
hard because of employer opposition for workers to form unions are we want
legislation that makes it possible for those workers a majority of
workers inside a car time they want to be in a union are to be in a union are it goes without
saying that we have millions of workers in this
country today who are struggling with horrendously low
wages we’ve got a raise the minimum wage to a livable wage I was just for the rally in Washington
DC yesterday I think about a hundred and fifty of them all over the country where workers are
fighting for a higher minimum wage for the right to join unions are those workers who are working for
companies to cover get government contracts in government buildings are was out
there with them in Washington DC are they want to see the minimum wage
rates to fifteen dollars an hour wanna be able to try to %um and I think that makes a lot of subject
are clearly when we talk about just the it is not
acceptable that women are making 78 cents on the dollar for
what a man makes doing the exact same work with you to
make sure your pay equity in this country equal pay for equal work
for women workers are I think that issue they do I have to
talk about but have not talked about anywhere near enough is our disastrous trade policies that if
nafta have to permanent normal trade relations
with China which have given a green light to many companies to shut down in
america are and move to low-wage countries we r
for some 60,000 factories in the last the 12 or 13 years we need to have companies reinvesting in
america naughty in low-wage countries all over the world
trade becomes a very important part i text of a serious agenda to rebuild the american
middle-class are we live in a highly competitive global economy are we cannot compete effectively for
good-paying jobs unless we have a well-educated workforce arm them years ago the United States lead the world in terms of percentage of
our people who graduated college today we are in
12th place are the country’s a understand the significance and the
importance of making sure that their people regardless of income get a college
education are we do not are so you have in college absolutely on affordable for a lot of
working-class families all the young people are graduating college deeply deeply in
debt that’s crazy following a fair to the families in the
individual young people it is spurt for our economy we want to
encourage everybody was the ability and the desire
to get a higher education about what their ages about what their income is to be able to
do so you know it’s fun to be the forty fifty years ago some other great public universities in
this country University of California colleges in New York City steak houses
all over this country we should was virtually fully virtually
free anybody regardless of income could go
today we have regressed significantly and the cost of colleges
are affordable for many so we’ve got to address that issue and child care as well you’re working
mom today it is very hard unified quality
affordable child care all we have two arm deal with the disaster that is wall
street are when you talk about the economy
we’re not gonna talk about significant changes in the economy are less you have
a financial system whose job years to get money out into the productive
economy function all a bank is not an end in
itself it is to take money in and get money out into the productive economy to those
businesses and institutions businesses producing real goods and services to
help all homeowners buy homes to help people make the investments they
need not to be a Highland unto itself with the goal of making huge profits
just for themselves what you see now is Wall Street in the
major financial institutions our world unto themselves who only job
to make outrageous pop our program that what we have to do is
reform our tax system so that the wealthy a large corporations
pay their fair share of taxes and we’ve got a protect the El Bulli a
perfectly up but not cut social security and medicare we have to have a problem
proposal from the area likely to make the huge progress in to put like to build really we’ll be
right back this is the Thom Hartmann program up next year calls
for senator Sanders and your thoughts on his 12-point program to restore america’s middle months and welcome back senator check some
calls but so it’s okay gem in Lockport
Illinois watching free speech TV and DirecTV you are on their senator Sanders palm sander Sanders I hope you both
enjoyable Thanksgiving of my question to senator is I noticed
that the congress’ pushing a $585 billion dollar
defense budget and why can’t we take nearly five
billion to that and put it toward snap or our food assistance programs I think
you know we’re I think we have enough weapons 5 p.m. I
agree with you absolutely and I we go further than $5 billion um look we need a strong defense it’s a
dangerous world in which we live are but they are is tremendous pressure
from the military-industrial complex folks who make you two bodies
from the weapon systems are to keep spending a whole lotta money
on on the military and I will tell you that
my republican colleagues Wilson take over the Senate now control the House they will
go forward Melissa very mistaken trying to cut
social security medicare medicaid education nutrition programs all the programs for the american people
desperately need and the one area they want to expand spending is in the military so I
strongly oppose that effort I think you’re right I think we can make
traditions cuts in the military are in a tough spot in the need to the
american people quirky in Rochester New York watching free
speech TV on your senator Sanders yes senator i agree with all your plan
points a for planned to get the economy going a
while so like to volunteer to work in your campaign fact I’ll come there were mad asleep in
your right if a f2f cokie thanks very much you know 5 said
many times I am giving thought to running for president that is a very very difficult monumental decision for my
family and myself and for those people who who support me and
we’re just trying to ascertain hard work I know supporter if I ran for
president there will be a very different type of
campaign hand for us to win it would require
literally unprecedented level love Press Group activism on the part of
people who are prepared to take on the billionaire class and four-part to make that happen and from we’re trying to ascertain book
support the result left but thanks very much for your support cokie center we have just a minute until the
break what does it say about the state of democracy in our republic when 8 presidential candidate on whose positions are supported by well over
eighty percent of America virtually all these positions arm has two has to be considering money
before running for president funny situation
and you know I didn’t talk about service providers from a coaching what it is parental friend is I have said
many many times at the end of the day what I worry very
much about us losing our democratic traditions and moving to another kakaka former
fighting palm if you’re today a billionaire you were billions of
dollars you walked into the washington press
from inside-the-beltway media said look I’m worth billions of
dollars I’m picking a running for President of the United States if a person not you but for personal or
whatever that person would be tomorrow a very significant can predict Republican
candidate for President of the United States
because by definition you she had billions of dollars a good mouth a very you know about the
television aired and that is what it’s happening in our
country money or chrome people upgrade I peeled who
don’t have a whole lot of money second-class political fixers sorry
bernie sanders with us we’ll be back you called center 20 has passed a law to Macintosh bernie
our national town-hall meeting with senator Bernie Sanders taking your calls
mark in Tacoma Washington you’re on the air
sander Sanders thank you very much first the united states have a great
many problems guy get the 30 questions are possibly three harder
to make a check in order to make any changes you first have created a fire or the
changes can be made correct yes okay would you support a
constitutional amendment that will move created anti entities from our
legislative not electoral process and directly ties campaign contributions
to our economy constitutional amendment they’re
actually posted on constitutional dash right star or well I would support mark is the immediate moving as quickly as we
can to overturn our citizens United public funding of
elections for the club the most important thing that we could
do now and that means ordinary people rather than just a very wealthy of those
candidates supported by the very wealthy will be up to run for office to net in Heinz Field georgia you’re on the air
center centers hi think time so I can understand urs
height no there’s a lot of talk about the middle class and no talk about
the poor you know and I guess my question is beyond what you support
for the middle class in all the land all the things that you left dead for
people who are hungry people who don’t have jobs people where the outcome like their died back man it
at the right word and are getting that and I am Not sure
thank you sequestration is not what you want what
no not even sequestration I mean like
Detroit where copy of your pocket did did cities
are blighted and there’s no jobs and there’s nothing bored and what are you gonna do for the back you
know for like rebuilding the cities so that there are
places that people want to shop in people want you I’m comin and had to be alive again you know the weight is a great example a
backdrop for school first appointed you made is that we do
not discuss poverty in of and you’re absolutely right it’s
not a word I think that was on the lips terribly many candidates have a large
selection of the fact is that we have over 40 million Americans who are living
in poverty today it is almost numbers almost as hard is it has ever been in the history of
america Hall we have poverty growing among senior
citizens we have the highest rate of childhood poverty in the industrialized
world server solutions I think what we’ve got
to do is people number one obviously have to create a
economy where people have decent paying job
somebody is a decent paying job but I can live in poverty circle the
world while we attempt to do that you have to protect those people and that means we make sure that nobody
in america goes hungry that we learn from countries
around the world where the rate of childhood poverty
about 18 percent but its candidate here and elsewhere 3 45 percent your to provide help to moms and dads to
take care of their children and provide educational opportunity for
those kids including early childhood education heart pirate
my Republican colleagues har how the Robin Hood are policy in reverse they take from the
poor to give to the rich my view was that we take from the rich
should we give to the poor are we want to help those people of
hungry and we have a lot of people who are hungry in america that means expanding
nutrition programs not cutting the food stamp program but
simultaneously simultaneously have to build an economy where young people do not experience 18
percent unemployment but are able to go out and get decent paying jobs in sport careers but your point is are we cannot I think we cannot leave
put our backs on the millions and millions of people
who are struggling and that’s absolutely right and that fight is gonna come up or in the next few months our republican
colleagues will want to cut medicaid job or people offer health insurance
gonna want to cut back on nutrition programs course even more
hunger in America cut back on early childhood education make a bad
situation even worse for your point is absolutely right we’ve
got to protect the most vulnerable people in this country the elderly for children
the disabled of veterans I intend to play an active role in that
my can upland Calif on your senator Sanders
alexander’s fares it’s an honor to speak with you I just have a question time mention like
80 percent the American College would agree with your possessions but somehow you and more probably the Democratic
Party president are unable to communicate these positions and win elections based
on the public supporting the positions what can you in the democratic party do
to resolve this home i cud is very good question and we
have a fireplace saying that everything or virtually
everything that I have said this morning from so what i think
is a sensible economic agenda for america you supported by the vast majority of
the people should we rebuild our infrastructure and create jobs yes to raise the minimum wage yes should
we do pay equity for women workers yes we transform our trade policy so
that works for workers and not just multinational corporations
yes for all these issues we do have supported you just saw that Audley of the left disastrous lectured
up a few weeks ago with a Democrat Scott the clock handed
to them are and yet in four from a very
conservative states for the way for safety welfare devoted
very strongly to raise the minimum wage and then voted for Republican candidates
for the United States other who opposed to raising the minimum wage
what do we do about that well an end well I think you’re a couple
points I thank you you touched on one of them the truth of
the matter is or the media in general which is
corporately owned are is like inclined to focused on the price of working families what
are the reasons but I love this particular program is
that every week from what we hear from real people we’ll talk about the real struggles that
they have economically every person who talks the hundreds of
thousands of people who have the same experience I don’t
think the media is particularly interested in that for you with that you have the media is
doing is focusing on sensationalism well you know certainly the great Obama
crisis weeks riverboat but we don’t walk away Ferguson where
you want to be the real story for fighters police brutality and it’s not
just young black people being picked up willy nilly on street corners of charge
group an informer called by police it is but african-american
youth unemployment history Prof at 30 pickup alluvium an entire generation
how often do we talk about that so I think there are a lot of freedom flight but
clearly we’ve got to do a lot better job in getting the word out senator Bernie
Sanders will be right back more your your questions you’re listening to the Thom Hartmann
program call 202 536 2370 it’s brunch with Bernie here on
the Thom Hartmann program are your thoughts on senator Sanders

December 1st 2014 I’m Thom Hartmann economic and labored the this the the up up the 10 the time of the program it’s our
brunch with Bernie are senator Bernie Sanders taking your calls and in particular on his
12-point suggestion rebuild our roads rivers
climate change number two number three create jobs number for protect unions
number five raise the wage number six pay equity number seven making trade work for
workers number eight cutting college cost number nine breaking up the big
banks number ten bring health care to all number eleven ending poverty in number 12 stop tight
tax dodging corporations absolutely brilliant and very welcome
back okay for senator sees me let’s pick up
some calls your Brian in Springfield Massachusetts you’re on your senator
Sanders thank you for my I think my car my
question is with regard to unions and companies
about a month ago FairPoint communications workforce
contract they have with the union has expired and rather than work under the parking
attract while they negotiate they impose their own contract which in
turn triggered a strike about a month ago so Vermont New
Hampshire and Maine no communication workers are on strike
and I was wondering if mister sanders led to believe his opinion on the matter
if he’s any positive arm I’ll come hopefully in the near
future well brian thank you very much I am more than aware of for situation with their point which impacts
up the people in the work to in no main new
hampshire my state of Vermont we have met with the workers for unions are but on the phone with leadership
FairPoint alright I think good description the situation is
exactly right workfare point is basically saying to Union is here for you don’t except major cut it pensions and future health care
benefits are and if you don’t allow us to
outsource jobs out of our region for Perry much more
wages which continue the race to the bottom
rather pick new workers decide which is helping and although here over typically low wages are not
that that’s what we offer you take a leave are the result has been I could tell you
that in this respect whole lot of people are now seeing
terrible service him and it’s a very important issue
because telephone to the first sarcastically life-and-death if you’re
having a heart attack with you need medical service or firehouse or Crime you need to get to
the proper people are people are not able to do that so I
think we see no significant deterioration answer first are as a result of airports
are kept are and I’m working as hard as I can to demand a fair point come back to the
table and negotiate in good faith which they are certainly not going now
Tom and media Pennsylvania mice and their riders at
media pennsylvania time you’re on the air was as energetic that that media pennsylvania I in army
unit in person myself I was a union representative for 22 years was a locomotive engineer not for infrastructure improvements highways
rails everything for that that benefits everybody including the
corporations and big stores like Walmart that depend upon transportation have you know their fuel cost dependent upon
how but the roads are I my concern is the cost the net cost it looks like it’s gonna be
a trillion dollars a year but you you know you would have to be so
you had me sold on this is a plan to the point while support if you
can just give me a a answer on to questions that I have and i won you know what do you think is
going to be the net cost per year for providing all these good jobs and is
it going to be just paid to taxes or the Corporation is no one
has the paperwork drama taxpayer myself and number two are all these new construction jobs gonna go
to american citizens or are they gonna be eligible for for people that that just have a work
permit that won’t be allowed to work throughout
the country President Obama’s executive action kustra okay let me up
for the first one first father trillion dollars
a year it would be a total of trillion-dollar spread over several
years arm the American Society of Civil Engineers estimates we need three
trillion dollars workforce get to work do it and put workers back to work are circular walk home we need jobs
for everybody in this country and I think this our business certain you know I support
Obama’s executive a action all I think we have
to deal with the immigration situation in this country which is now
are completely broken our people are in this country and get a
work permit they’re allowed to work on drops but Hall we need to put all of our people
back to work this is the most significant way that
all I know are to put people are back to work all your work but it
worked it decent of wanna go Hunger up and I hope
we don’t get hung up hardened no Americans or immigrants are versus people were born in this country
the fuck you top black or white or hispanic or anybody else it is creating jobs for all our people and the fastest way that economist tell
us we can do that is right rebuilding our infrastructure
now you ask a good question how do you find the fix will tell you how your fund a four-spot we all losing are at least a hundred billion
dollars every year by companies that’s their
their profits are in the Cayman Islands Bermuda
Luxembourg are Switzerland and other countries and
water to not pay american tax have had a shaman
work on very very hard but I think it’s time
that these large corporations trouble which for general election polite and over previous pay nothing in
federal income tax nothing medical you pay more than 80 so
what demand the corporations and the wealthy
who were doing phenomenally well stop paying their fair share of taxes
like to put their money among all the places for the rebuilding
our infrastructure let’s put of our people back to work let’s not get hung up this country what
about things the republicans have done very successfully is they divide and the
fight first the far west and then it’s on
sexual orientation or not women versus men they always do that
let’s put our finger with the real problem is latest agreed of the one percent the
billionaire class who don’t want to pay their fair share
of taxes so what I asked them to stop playing with supported into infrastructure to create jobs for
all of our people Jesse in Plainfield Illinois you’re on the air center centers yeah a
burn injuries honor to talk to you I got a quick
question there’s a buncha pause you know we work I some a bus make in between 18 a 22-hour of not try our lines which is a livable
wage tried by if they raise the minimum wage
to $15 bucks an hour what’s that gonna do to us like some
guys make an 18 bucks an hour and you can make reeboks Las working at
a McDonald’s and you have no skill trade what sets also do though this is what a
good question justly what I think we do it I don’t think
you’re gonna have a fifteen dollar an hour minimum wage tomorrow makes gonna go up right now the minimum
wage its other reporters sub out: wherever it was in night i think im real dollars in 1964 topic so I think just he would you raise
the people at the bottom you’re gonna have to raise the people in
the middle as well the most significant economic problems
that our country is facing is the growth %uh low-wage jobs about it
absolutely imperative that we raise those drops so people working at eight
or nine bucks now should move up to at least fifteen
dollars on all over a period of time people working at eighteen dollars to
twenty dollars an hour which is a livable wage should also be
going up so I don’t think it’s I think it’s a positive poor people in
that wage bracket he drives wages of and that is what exactly we have to
there was a study that came out recently I just three points out with a list that the average male work of today is making seven hundred dollars less in inflation
accounted for dollars that he made 41 years ago women are
making less than they made in 2007 so what
you’re saying is medium wages the median wage gonna go with his wages
are going down we’ve got away from us and I
raising the minimum wage impact not only the lowest wage increases it’s
gonna be a trickle up theory impacting middleweight employees as well
bill and a in Maine is that by doing in Maine
bliss 9 a.m. said: 670 boating boden thank you you’re on the
air sander Sanders thank you and the day Domino center for
so I applaud your proposals focus on college students and
and trying to reduce those costs because the dead being settled on the on joint people today is almost criminal
it’s certainly a moral but up I also happened to spend some time in
Detroit and call earlier mentioned it and that city
itself is revitalizing one of things I noticed that need is there people moving back downtown the
young people they’re gonna start having families what
will keep calm down there is good in Safe Schools and so on and off if you had any focus
on that absolutely on where five men should earlier are I think we need a revolution in this
country in the way we do education and for a spot it might be a
good idea if we focused on education we on the stood the importance of public education are and clearly if the nation starting with
the very youngest children are we are not giving educators or
families to support that they need are from the earlier stage we have a
child care system in this country which is a total
disaster which means that million for kids by the
time they get schools which are often not of the
quality we want them to be play hard they get to schools are
already behind are many other give so I think Tampa your your question bill we focus on
education which means that we make education and teaching an audit
profession well reimburse profession as many other
countries do are and that we make sure that we are not laying off teachers without
cutting foreign language programs or of programs because we don’t have the
resources to do that a call earlier mention that we’re looking at a
huge military budget for some people think that it’s important we spent more on the military’s on the rest of
the world combined I don’t agree with them I would like to see of they you know
we’re spending more per capita Education we have the best educational a lot of
ways to do that but we had typically focus on the fact that in the deeper every kid in
the country got a quality education senator Bernie Sanders with this brunch
with Bernie more your calls sub-sectors their
efforts you’re listening to Tom Hartman visit Thom Hartmann dot com per audio
and video art by the way the way that I got senator
Sanders 12-point plan is by subscribing to the Bernie bytes: you can do that
over at Sanders dodson about God and welcome back Yvonne in Kingston
Georgia washing free speech TV on the dish network you’re on the air center
senators hello I Sanders arm I worked in grew up in Michigan and I’m
all for unions my question i love u 12 points areas as far as infrastructure is are that each state hires they’re all workers and starts their own unions to a salt saw every state has people work
read shot now this proves from this is a fifty-state program every
state in this country has infrastructural need and and the
state should be the P should be the entities the identifying
but these are in some states are the need is gonna be rose and other
states will be bridges in other states it will be real and
other states will be water systems or wastewater plants each state will have I
think their own set up for infrastructure
priorities and and those states should be given a the the power to make decisions as to
where the money is going imogene in Fresno Calif you’re on the
air and watching free sweetie and dish on your senator Sanders imaging her image in apparently she’s not
listening to her telephone Tom in Tucson Arizona watching free
speech TV run your senator Sanders very this car display not 3 sure you are fire actually more to take here are lyrics retry me 3s latter here capitalistic economic system this country throws are near the first part of the question yeah
I think essentially the question was if we’re gonna spend three to five trillion
dollars over some years to do everything you’re talking about and some or all that gets added to the
national debt does that cause a crisis got okay good good question a comedy
about a response are the reason that the deficit and the national debt has gone up so
much in recent years has an enormous amount to do with the fact
the we Fort in a war in Iraq which cost which will eventually end up costing us three
trillion dollars on tape for are we have given you tax
breaks to the wealthiest people in this country which will cost us a huge amount of
money we have a tax system in general which allows for you check
loopholes for corporate entities are not paying
their fair share of taxes and I think if we had he fair and
progressive tax system that asks the wealthy and large
corporations for paying their fair share of taxes we could wave
the revenue that we need to in fact invest in our country without driving the deficit up and a
term to deficit let me say this I know many Mr Republican colleague smoke whether
doctor full-time when bush left office we are the largest deficit in america
mistress 1.4 trillion dollars in the last six years we have driven
back deficit down very very significantly way below 50 percent what is was compared to what GDP we are in
reasonably good shape so it is a problem but not a major
problem for more important problem is the club’s the American middle by believe back with more your calls for
senator Sanders just a mock 10 minutes do done this before you know all the facts
and the Bernie Sanders on the line with us it’s our brunch with Bernie our
national town-hall meeting with the center keenan in Manitou Springs Colorado you’re on
the air center centers well senator Sanders hey doing today good stood well anyway I just wanted to
get on with you again I spoke with you last week from the perspective of the used in our country and I as a person that only makes I mean II
literally make nine dollars an hour and making out a little over 200 bucks a week after
taxes comes out to like twelve thousand dollars twelve thousand something
dollars a year and I I just wanna know what we can do I’m as young people that
are just getting screws put on us so hard car you know my boss makes about a million
dollars a year we all make about nine dollars an hour that’s pretty you know a sturdy standard these days and the
they’re basically stealing us to a point where we can’t really do anything people I
think activist and thank you for raising letters because I
think we do not pay enough attention to what’s happening to young people I i
recall your call from a couple weeks ago I’ll we have a generation that went out
into the labor force after the Great Wall Street Crash where
it was very very difficult to find jobs an orphan if people for jobs they
weren’t a in line with their educational
background up but I think week need to do with i’ve mentioned earlier
are if I think for I will wage workers we need to make
sure that a low-wage workers are now turning
starvation wages and nine dollars an hour today is probably
an adequate you can’t live on mind also how Tom you may have seen there was a piece
of the Huffington Post for some person veteran that but it was a woman who
worked in McDonald in Denmark it she said I work in
mcdonald’s the market because labor negotiations by
make twenty dollars an hour Ryan yeah working in the Gulf our talk
to McDonalds workers in this country makes up 50 an hour how does that happen at a McDonald’s pay
20 bucks our dubach at seven fifty dollars some fifty a in this country and the interest they
have Union our contractor or negotiations which
weighs those wages so we’ve got to if people go
to work in a fast food industry or not give you another example I was
out in Nevada are a couple months ago and they have a
coronary workers union there which has been enormously successful in making sure that those people who
work at hotels who clean bets all who work that has been traditionally
very low-paid those workers now because of a decent
Union or owning Libby Quaid just learning
eating 20 bucks I’ll they have good health care so we can we
don’t have to identify that working in fast food a working at a
hotel necessarily mean for patients it doesn’t have to be that way but I
have a lot to do with the building of the union movement to protect those workers so it’s like
also cannot mention to call or I think we have a focus on
education making sure that people regardless of the income their family if
they need more education for better-paying jobs they should be
able to get that education we got if they should be able to do that are in
that we need to create millions of the subject of in this country so there’s a lot that we could do but I
appreciate the call of focusing on the fact %uh the problems
facing are you you unemployment take nobody talks about
is over 18 percent african-american youth
employment over 30 percent those issues that have
got to be focused on clearer in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin you’re
on the air senator Sanders yes hi senator for small thank you so much for having the courage
to tackle the issue tackle and speaking the truth in it insane world my question is how do we get more people
thinking you know you do I so we can having conversations and effect some change and %uh hopefully you
run in 2016 spectacular arm I’m erase them you know the last
election for me was obviously the more I think full
robberies like the one guy’s 1 but maybe even portable lighting was the
fact that something like for the top 36 percent of the people
voted to: in that neighborhood it was a low have it eighty percent of
young people didn’t vote so I declare you need work you know I
would call a political revolution in the sense all in com a number of
different ways making it clear to working people at the young people that they live in a
democratic society in warm water really don’t understand what democracy
is about. and they do not believe that the political process if significant port improving their life
are in a variety of ways to education through organizing we’ve
got to change so I was thinking you know what i was mayor of Brawley ca
way back when I was elected or not in nineteen eighty want to be mayor abroad for my first thing I did I think
even before I took office after I was elected is with these very
large town meetings we put people together it was okay but we could do for you for
our community what are we going to do for Economic Development Committee what a beautiful women in our community
and huge numbers of people came out and we listen to what they have to say
and then you know what we did we started implementing those ideas so
the people said while my voice makes difference and two
years later when I ran for reelection we had a horrible a doubling of the
voter turnout because people said you know what
government is listening to what I’m eating to see things happen so I think it’s a
trickle into their cause I think we’ve got to organize people put pressure on political leaders could
cause people to run for office make things happen to make people see
the difference if you’re marching in the streets for a higher minimum wage we get that
minimum-wage you’re gonna say take government and politics mean
something to my life I’ve seen some results if we get health care as was ultimately efforts that we make
we’re organized gotta educate gotta make things happen we got to make people see the difference
in their lives because the political activity senator
we just over 25 seconds to wrap up the hour
all I hope people pay are a lot of attention to what’s going
on in Washington right now our congress will shut down home you’re
a week or two weeks from very very important issues are out there
in terms of tax expanders whether or not we give more huge tax breaks to large corporations
and ignore the new low-income people and the
sustainable energy are and they are is a very large problem will spill out there are which
is going to reform the government from we should be paying attention other what
is in it and what is not it senator thanks so much for being
with us this week part in every way top-rated is such a
pleasure and be sure to check out bernie’s website Sanders dodd senator got you can sign up for the Bernie
buzzes newsletter get all the information you can find him on Facebook will be
back with anything goes Friday although I wanna start out by talking about how Chile the country has changed and why you’re listening to Tom Hardy

  1. Robert Smith

I'm going to be the pessimist here and say that even if Bernie Sanders runs and gets elected, nothing will get done as long as we have a republican congress and senate. Clearly we all know what the republicans stand for and that's corporations because they've been bought off. The other problem is the American voter who is misinformed and will always vote against their economic interest and they don't see that.

Regardless, we will be voting in 2016 for the next president and because Bernie Sanders is always on message all the time, he will definitely get my vote hands down. I hope you run Mr. Sanders and make this country a better country for all of it's people. Keep on doing what you are doing and stay focused. Tell the American people what the real story in America is and why it's declining and who's at fault.

Thanks, as always, for your weekly input with Thom Hartmann on the subject matters that most effect us..
